Potting mix calculator

Work out how much potting mix fills your pots or raised beds, in litres, US gallons, quarts, cubic feet and cubic yards, and split it into a recipe.

Runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is saved or sent to us.

Measure the inside of the container: the width across the top and the depth from the rim to the bottom. The result is the volume of mix needed to fill it to the rim, so leave out what any drainage layer or root ball will take up.

Fresh mix settles after watering. Add a margin here if you want spare mix to top up with.
Split the total into a mix recipe (optional)

Enter the parts of a recipe you've chosen, for example 2 parts potting mix to 1 part bark. Volumes are shared out in that ratio.

How it works

Enter the inside measurements of the container in inches, centimetres or feet. Round pots use π × (width ÷ 2)² × depth, boxes and raised beds use length × width × depth, and tapered pots are treated as a smooth cone with its tip cut off. Multiply by the number of containers, add an optional allowance for settling, and optionally share the total out in a recipe ratio you choose.

What it can't do

The result is the volume needed to fill each container to the rim. It doesn't subtract the root ball or a drainage layer, and curved or bellied pots come out approximate. It doesn't recommend a recipe: the ratio is whatever you enter.
