Should I water now?

Check the mix, not the calendar. Answer a few questions about your plant's pot, mix and leaves to find out whether to water now, wait or check the roots.

How it works

The answer comes from what the potting mix feels like below the surface, how heavy the pot is, the growing medium, light, season and any symptoms. It is matched against fixed rules written from extension and orchid-society guidance.

  • Wet or soggy mix never gets "water now".
  • Wilting with wet mix sends you to check the roots first.
  • When the answer is to water, it explains how for that medium (soil, bark or moss).

What it can't do

It doesn't count days or set reminders: how fast a pot dries changes with light, temperature, humidity, pot size, the mix and the season. It covers our five main houseplants; for other plants it gives cautious, general advice. There is no guidance yet for semi-hydro or LECA reservoirs.
